this last weekend was my first weekend of collegiate racing for the 2009 season, and well it hurt, a lot! here's the details:
dave, alisha and i left slc 2:30pm, arrived in grand junction ~7pm, checked into the sweet motel 6, and i immediately hopped on my bike to wake up the legs, and do my training ride for the evening: 6 little ring sprints, was great to ride the outskirts of town, saw some huge plantation like homes, and got a nice tour of the airport there. i didn't get the best night's sleep, excuses, excuses....
early sat morning: ITT hill climb (i'm not that great of a climber, but i thought what the hell i'll at least pick up 1 point for the team. i started with 3 other B's, so in my mind i expected to at least take 3rd and was thinking i would end up in 2nd as i was gaining on the USAFA guy in front of me. well the results have it (there were more than us 3): 11th 19:42.00, over the 4mile climb to mesa national park, the roads were nice and smooth with the exception of through the tunnels, the views were fantastic....
sat afternoon: crit at a go cart race track, sounds gay but it was actually a lot of fun... 1 took 12th out of 20 which isn't all that bad, but not all that good either... i seem to be an aggressive crit racer and when i get pissed i just go hard and try to make the other racers suffer, well this time i suffered, bad.... i pulled hard for 3+ laps and no one had any intention of coming around me to help until i sat up with my hands off the bar like WTF you guys are sissy's, i even yelled at some dick from csu, my words were quite colorful so i won't go into detail but basically i told him he was a big sissy as he had 4 other guys in the field and to get his ass up in front and take a pull... after someone finally pulled through 3 crashes happened back to back on 3 consecutive corners, i seemed to escape them all but it put me a little off the pace and screwed me mentally. oh well, lesson learned, think i could have one this crit if i would have rode smarter and not gotten mentally messed up.
sunday morning: road race. was the usual mesa state road race......i thought i had grown to love since my 4th place finish as a C the first time i raced it. yesterday was a different story. as we started out the pace was quite mellow and commonly required braking. the first real climb is where things started to decline, i was off the back with one ride behind me and another 100yards ahead of me. i rode steady to catch the csu rider in front of me and we worked to get back into the main group. it seemed like when we got back on the pace picked back up...it hurt going that hard up that dam false flat on the first lap and i didn't last long.....i was alone for 2+ laps, oh and did i mention the nasty cross wind on the entire course, yeah it sucked, or actually blew my left one, then my right one...... luckily because i was so far off the back of the group i was able to hop on with any other ride or group that passed by and i did just that, and i think it was the only way i made it back to the start line.. i ended up in 12th out of the 16 starters, not so bad, but i made me really think if i should drop down and race C...... who knows maybe the hill climb and crit hurt me more than i thought. or maybe i am just not at that level.......only time will tell.
took some photos of the views while driving, will try to post them later on..
